“Love…True love…” Westley goes to great lengths to rescue his true love. A duel with a swordsman, a wrestling match with a giant, cliff-sides, monsters, poison, torture, and even death. But he comes through all of it for Buttercup. Wesley puts it well when he’s reunited with Buttercup: “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” Compare Wesley’s love for Buttercup to Christ’s love for us. What lengths does Christ go to for us? Read and discuss Galatians 2:20 and Mark 15:1-40.
The Bride of Christ – Humperdink would have made an absolutely lousy husband. Jesus never married, but the Bible is FULL of “mawage” imagery. Read what the Bible has to say about marriage in Ephesians 5:21-33. This kind of love with submission and sacrifice isn’t only meant for husbands and wives. It’s meant for all of us. Every Jesus follower. Together, we are Jesus’ bride. Why is it important to be united with each other and fully focused on Christ? Read and discuss 2 Corinthians 11:2-3.
The Other Cheek – Toward the end of the movie, Inigo says, “I’ve been in the revenge business for so long I don’t know what I’ll do with my life.” Compare Inigo Montoya’s journey to the journey that Jesus calls us to. Inigo’s cheek bears the scar reminding him of his father’s killer. Westley scars his other cheek before sparing Inigo’s life. Is this what it means when Jesus says to turn the other cheek? Read Matthew 5:38-40. What is the Christ-like attitude toward those that wrong us? Are we, like Inigo, supposed to take justice into our own hands? If not, who deals out justice? Read and discuss Romans 12:19. Why is it hard to live this out?
